The Weekly Buzz
The Oklahoma game really brought on an influx of recruits. Seeing dominant performances from so many of our defensive players, along with the great atmosphere, really was a huge draw, bringing in our 11th-16th recruits. The major atmosphere this last weekend needs to be captured more often if we want to keep convincing high school players that this is the best place to play football. Bo Pelini wants to see it every home game from the fans. Beyond thinking about about the stadium, the coaches are trying to open up the offense and let 'er rip (it would help if we knew who the QB is going to be). But the away game this weekend is the focus of the coaches this weekend. Kansas may be having a down season, but they are a dangerous team at any time.
Bo recruits his own way » There was plenty of concern over the summer about Coach Pelini's recruiting efforts and tactics, along with the quality of players they were getting on board. I guess doing things in your own time works, but winning big games works even better. Now they just want to finish it off.
Check out the popular recruiting services for complete lists: Rivals, Scout, and ESPN.
Can all your top players be on defense? » Around here, we're always talking about how you need five big-time, real-deal players to make a team great. It is acceptable to have all of them on defense? We're all familiar with the antics of Suh and Crick against opposing quarterbacks, but this week the highlight has (deservedly) been on Matt O'Hanlon and Phillip Dillard. Dillard has been getting better each week, but it all came together this Saturday. But O'Hanlon's efforts were even more off the charts, earning national honors for this week's efforts.
Flexible is the new multiple » Playing a specific game plan for each opponent is the goal of Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson and Coach Pelini. So who's going to lead this flexible offense? Your guess is as good as mine. Apparently, it was difficult for Watson to call the type of game he did against the Sooners, because it was such a conservative game plan that Pelini wanted. At least the defensive confidence is improving every week, but Bo would like to see the crowd back up both sides of the ball like they did on Saturday.
One game at a time » Even though the Kansas State game next week is looking like the determiner for the Big 12 North title, the Jayhawks are not a team to look past. They've got a dangerous set of offensive weapons. Kansas wants to get bowl eligible this weekend, and we want to stop them. Ndamukong Suh wants to kick them down like a dog. Sorry, PETA.
