The Weekly Buzz

This week is all about seeing whether all the talk brought on by coaches will be backed up. They have consistently said that they are looking at every position on the field for potential changes. A freshman will probably get the nod, but it's not apparently the one everyone's hoping for. No matter who is leading our team on the field, it will be important to have a good showing down in Texas as the Huskers don't want to lose any traction in the recruiting battles out there right now. Baylor will not try and make it easy for us, but there are some questions marks around the Bears offense, and a quarterback change thrown into the mix.

A freshman gets a start on offense! » This isn't the move we were hoping for, but Khiry Cooper is the first change that has backed up the coaches talk this week. But you know what they say about those tough love type of coaches, you're doing fine when you're being ignored. But if they pay attention to you, look out for the hammer to drop. I guess he's worried about improving the toughness of his team right now. What could be tougher than going against our defense in practice?

Quarterback controversy is a media phrase » Bo Pelini has also said time and time again that sparks don't come from just one player and it takes a good team around you for plays to happen. Guess what Bo? Fans don't care! We just want you to name a starting quarterback yesterday! For us impatient types, we're going to have to wait until Saturday like the rest of the world. It's a decision that will be made by Bo and Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson together. Plenty of people have an opinion, but Mr. McKewon has captured the sentiments of fans quite nicely.

Another athlete ready to jump on board » Quincy Enuwa is the second receiver to join the 2010 committed class. Curtis Carter was the first, and the Shreveport Times has a great piece with him about the process. This weekend is a pretty important game for keeping this recruiting momentum in place. A win here will likely improve the timeslot for next weekend's game.

In case you forgot... » Suh is still the man. NU loses and he still wins awards.

I forgot to include my paragraph about the Bears in this story last night (when I alluded to Baylor in the opening).  It showed up in the BRN email newsletter, but I will re-post it here.

The Bears will probably put the burden of their offensive problems on the shoulders of freshman Nick Florence this weekend.  This third string quarterback has started three games against opponents Kent State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State and appeared in garbage time against Iowa State.  With a passer rating of 117, he has compiled 720 yards, completing 59.6% of his passes.  He has throw for two touchdowns and two interceptions while running for two TDs as well.  Baylor is 1-2 with Florence at the helm.  Even with the Huskers offensive woes (44 points in Big 12 play), the Bears are in even worse shape with 24 points in Big 12 games so far.

What a sad state when we’re this hung up on who our starting QB will be.  I guess I’m not surprised that fans believe the media with all of the hype on Green.  They guy has played significantly in high school and during mop-up time.  I’m still not impressed by him based on what I’ve seen him do in games so far.  I don’t see him coming in and saving this season.  If Green starts every game for the remainder of this season I’m guessing we won’t be bowling this year.  However, it will be a good start for next year’s team but that doesn’t help this team this week.

I’m more impressed with Holt losing his starting job to Cooper.  I honestly don’t think Lee would be under this much scrutiny if we had receivers that could get open and make plays.

I’m not looking for a strong showing in Waco to be perfectly honest.  This is very much a game that NU could lose.  Everyone keeps saying this game is a turning point.  If NU loses it’s the turning point in the wrong direction.

And I thought last week was our turning point???  Prove me wrong Huskers!!!

You know what is hard for me to understand is when Bo was at LSU his last year they had Ryan Perrilloux come in and play meaningful snaps while Flynn was the starter so he was very familiar with that type of situation.  So why didn’t he do that with Cody so far this year?

There is no doubt that Green is not as accurate passer as Lee, but he could run zone read the rest of the year and win the Big 12 north.  It’s no secret we don’t have receivers or Joe Gantz at QB, so why not play a ball control offense that relys on tight ends, running backs, and a QB that can threaten with his legs.  That’s a formula that can work w/ Green in at QB.  Those LB’s are going to have to respect the run and next thing you know McNiel is slipping by for big yards.

We really don’t know if Green is not as accurate or if he can really make that many plays with his legs against first string opponents.  We just haven’t seen him enough, and I think we just need to see if he has what it takes to lead a team to victory.
