The WAC is Back in Lincoln

So Long, Sun Belt

For the first time in nearly two years Nebraska fans will get the chance to welcome a team not from the Sun Belt Conference to Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Before last September the Huskers had never faced a team from the SBC. Since then, that's all they've faced on the home turf outside the Big 12.

But now the WAC is back in what will be the Huskers' 21st game against the conference. And, in case you didn't notice, it's a conference that's coming off an uncharacteristically high profile opening week to the season.

If the Big East was the big loser over the weekend then the WAC may have just been the winner. First there was Hawaii, forced to use three different quarterbacks, putting up 588 yards of total offense in a 13-point loss to USC that felt much closer than that. Then there was Utah State, a team that edged Idaho 52-49 at the end of last season, going into Norman and playing the Sooners within a touchdown. At nearly the same time, Fresno State was putting an end to Cincinnati's 18-game regular season win streak. Then, in the game everyone saw last night, Boise State slugged out a gutty win against Virginia Tech.

Idaho opened their season last Thursday with a 45-0 win over North Dakota, rolling up 547 yards of offense behind two touchdown passes and 311 yards passing from North Platte native Nathan Enderle. (Not to mention a tricky and successful on-side kick to open the second half.)

The WAC is Back in Lincoln
While opening games are not the stuff trends are made of, rest assured that by association alone the WAC can offer a stiffer challenge than the SBC. There are good teams in this conference and they've been there a while. That generally makes the middle of the conference, Idaho included, better as well.

As noted in our Vandals preview, Idaho can move the football displaying a good bit of balance in the process. Last year Idaho topped 170 yards rushing in seven games while throwing for more than 300 yards in six others.

It may be just the challenge Nebraska needs after a defensive performance that left Bo Pelini "absolutely embarrassed" on Saturday. With a full week to prepare the ad hoc linebacking committe should be better prepared but the battle to watch should be up front.

Fun Fact

Nebraska is 19-1 all-time against the WAC with the lone loss coming against Hawaii in 1955.

Idaho brings the biggest offensive line in the FBS (334 lb. average) to Lincoln but it's an inexperienced bunch featuring four new starters. It'll be interesting to see what the vaunted Huskers defensive line will be able to do against that bunch after tallying only one sack and one tackle for a loss against Western Kentucky.

All eyes will be on the run game as the Hilltoppers found some room to run against Nebraska but despite the occasionally impressive ground numbers from the Vandals last year, they're still a throwing team. Will they try to pound it out and manage the clock behind their big guys or go with what got them there, namely Enderle?

This will be the best defensive backfield the quarterback has seen since his first start as a freshman at USC. Enderle is nothing if not poised and he performed admirably enough in that game for a freshman, throwing for 155 yards but avoiding any interceptions.

What Idaho hasn't been able to do is keep teams out of the end zone. From 2007 to 2009 the Vandals gave up an average of 38.48 points per game. They do return 10 starters from last year's defense, highlighted by NFL prospect Shiloh Keo at free safety, so at least they're experienced at giving up a lot of points.

The Huskers will almost assuredly see a tougher challenge this week than they did versus WKU. All eyes, or at least those not star struck by the speed of Taylor Martinez, will be on the defense and I fully expect the Vandals to have some success offensively.

This game will be closer than most fans would like at halftime but ultimately I'm guessing the Idaho defense will be their undoing.

As frequent commentor “Bill” wrote last week - Don’t sleep on Idaho. NU must clean up its defensive issues to not allow the Vandals to make it a game.

PS - not gonna miss the Sun Belt teams…

Idaho is a great test #2 for the Huskers.  I can hardly wait.
I didn’t get a good feel for our team in week 1.  I can’t really tell if we deserve a top 10 rank or not.  Stronger competition should help prove one way or another, and I think Idaho is stronger than folks know.

I think Nebraska needs to win, and win big.  People need to remember that Boise St. plays this team later on this season.  Voters and so-called experts tend to compare games/scores, even if the games were played at two different times of the season and home/away are different.  I think Bo and Company will be out to make another statement and will do whatever it takes to get up big. Bo needs to get that “killer instinct” instilled into an offense that needs some confidence.  I think 42-17 is a good prediction.  I’m seeing it more like 49-10.  I think the Blackshirts will come up with a few more big plays and will have some motivation after their Week 1 game.

I think Bo just wants to see his defense play the way they are capable of.  With a full week of practice for the newbies with the first string, I expect we’ll see a lockdown of the run game.  Our secondary will get tested which is good going into UW.  4 sacks, 4 TFLs, and 2 interceptions this game for the Blackshirts.  Offense will remind everyone of the glory days with another 500 yds plus performance.  Go Big Red!

Expect some trick plays from Idaho kind of like Boise State did to Oklahoma. I think Nebraska will be less balanced and establish the run, control the clock and not make the spread, forget about style points and just concentrate on finishing. IMO

I think this will be a good game
Not very impressed with BS (boise state) last night
not a number 5 team maybe a 15 team

I really wasn’t that impressed with Boise, either… but they DID manage to neutralize the running of the VT backs (other than Taylor).

Ryan Williams was really never able to get going, and that is a credit to the Boise defense.

While I think Boise can certainly play with anyone in the country, I can’t justify them actually getting into the championship with that soft schedule.

If we took their 3 toughest conference games and put them on NU’s schedule, we would call them “warm-up games.”

Just sayin’.

I was more impressed with Boise than I was Tech. The Broncos pretty much dominated up front which brings up the bigger question: What will this win be worth at the end of the year?

It’s billed now as a coming out party but, as I detailed last summer,, Virginia Tech is one of those teams that’s always billed as title contender but never ends up being one. They’ve lost at least 3 games in eight of the last 10 seasons and this year they’re playing with a young defense.

So how good of a team did Boise really beat? It wouldn’t shock me if Oregon State, the Broncos opponent two weeks from now, ends up ranked higher than the Hokies do.

Not trying to be disrespectful of either squad. I love the VT program and I do believe Boise can play with just about anyone in the country but I’m not sure this game was quite the cut and dried statement it’s been made out to be

I’d have to say I was rather impressed with Boise State.  Yes, VT does seem to want to underachieve every year, but they do usually end up solid at the end of the season.  I think Boise State made a lot of mistakes which is why they gave up their lead (105 yards in penalties…two of which kept scoring drives alive). Boise State dominated that game, lost focus in the middle, but pulled their act together when it mattered.

Crack is WAC
