Previewing Nicholls State

In one of the many classic quotes spawned by the Simpsons, one exchange between Homer Simpson and his daughter Lisa captures my feelings about the Nicholls State game:

“Dad, it's so enlightened of you to take us to a WNBA game� says Lisa

“Yeah, well nachos are nachos�, Homer replies.

We Husker fans wouldn't miss a football game, even when it's likely to be as exciting as watching Al Gore buying a new pair of shoes. The Huskers-Nicholls State contest is the equivalent of watching a twelve year-old boy fighting his six year-old brother. Not only is their no doubt about the outcome but it's just wrong on so many levels.

Sure some people will point to last year's close game at Indiana as a sign that Nicholls State could give the Huskers a contest. But that's the same Indiana team that went 1-7 in the Big 10, including absorbing a 27 point pounding by Michigan, a team Nebraska beat in the Alamo Bowl. No sale.

Then there are those who will offer how nice it will be to see option football again in Memorial stadium. To them I say, how exciting is option football when the team fails to tally even 200 yards? Will this somehow “prove� the superiority of the West Coast Offense? Not on your life.

No, all we can say is “at least we get to see our Huskers take the field� as we watch our favorite team cruise to victory and enjoy the Memorial game experience on a nice Fall Saturday. After all, Runzas are Runzas.
