Eight (8!) - A Musing…

Saturday afternoon's game was ridiculous. The number 8 just keeps rattling around in my head. The images of all those turnovers replay in my mind. It's enough to make you crazy. Sometimes, the only way to stay sane is to laugh. If you can't find a way to laugh at it yourself or tough times, you are cooked. So, for now, I offer this ridiculous post for an equally ridiculous situation.

Nebraska turned it over eight (8!) times. That's one more point than NU had and one less than ISU had. Seriously, a snowman. It got me thinking...

Eight is enough. Sing it with me... "Eight is enough to fill our lives with love..."

So, is Bo Pelini the Octo-Coach?

Nebraska's offense is the greatest show on the turf.

Or maybe it is "The Scoring Implosion."

Eight = Ocho. Maybe the game should have been on ESPN 8 "The Ocho"

If you were wondering how many turnovers it would take for NU to lose to ISU at home...well, now you know.

I was watching another football game today. And on one drive, they didn't fumble the ball. I was like, "hey, what's the deal? Shouldn't they fumble?"

If you did a shot for every turnover (you know who you are)...well, you are pretty drunk.

Seriously though, I will offer this one poignant reminder. Consider this public service announcement:
((Announcer voice)) "Parents - only you can prevent another sad day like today. Teach your children about ball security, please, before it's too late." Tear...

Share the Love

Zac Lee is not the answer. He’s not necessarily the problem, BUT he’s not the answer, either.  Name a successful football program without a leader playing QB.

We all are stunned.  i guess we can stop asking “Is Nebraska Back” and start now asking “How Far back is Nebraska?”

texas husker

Well finally I agree with someone, Lee might not be the answer but he isnt th problem or certainly not the only problem.  The whole offense is accountable.

Maybe it is the time for PIG, but lets not lay this at the feet of Zac.

Texas Husker I couldn’t agree more. Remember then first half of the Mizzou game when Zac Lee was struggling, Mr. Suh approached him on the sidelines and said don’t worried about it…...we’ll keep you in the game just keep at it. Who is that leader on the offensive side of the ball? Nebraska has a long history of leader QB’s…...now we just need to find out who can fill that roll.

I agree that an infusion of on the field leadership is necessary.  Zac doesn’t have it and it’s not to berate him….it’s just not who he is.  But I think CG has it.  I think had he started, we would have won the game.  There would have been turnovers yes, although I don’t think there would be eight.  He would have made a lot of mistakes but it’s something to build on.  What do we have on offense to build on now?

I can’t fault the effort out of the players, nearly all of those fumbles were caused by fighting for extra yards, but the focus was only on getting the yards not protecting the ball.  At least Zac seemed to be more dicisive in his decision making this week.

I guess the steadiness of Swift and Peterson were more important to this offense than we thought.

Dakota, you are not the first one to post the Swift and Peterson saying “more important than we thought”.  Come on, we all knew last year that our offense was going to be down this year!  Now that we are playing this year, we are harping on them like we expected them to be great.  They are not a great offense, and nothing through this year will make them great.  I am ok with that, and I think Bo took these units one at a time, he fixed the defense, in hopes that the current offense would win a few games for him.  Now next year is the key the year for him.  I think he will have an offense that will start clicking.  I have posted many times that I wish he would put Cody in and let him have the snaps, which would make him that much better next year, but if he doesn’t that is ok.

Nobody hated seeing that game more then me yesterday, you don’t lose at home and you don’t lose because of mental mistakes.  But come on, enough already with Swift and Peterson stuff and enough with the coaches have to go!  This team needs time to mature into thier roles, give it to them.  They will be back and they will be dominate!  Just not this year.  No team can do that year in and year out.  Especially when you are coming out of a 4 year slump like the Huskers have.

Niles Paul just kills me.

Incredibly gifted athlete… but an incredibly stupid football player.

I know it isn’t seen as cool to bag on 20 year-old kids, but if they are old enough to die in war…

The worst thing of all is to now see K-state on top of the North division.

I agree on the Niles Paul comment that he is incredibly gifted. He looks like our players in the 90’s, rock solid muscle. ADP potential. What I disagree with is the stupidity factor, the kid just caught bad breaks 2 weeks in a row?

I have to agree, this offense is mentally challenged and prone to mistakes.  Maybe a field general who can kick them in the but from time to time is the answer.  I am sure Green will make more dumb mistakes than Lee, but he also might add the leadership and spark this offense needs.  He already has a burned redshirt year, why not give him a shot against Baylor?

Take the gloves off.

There’s no excuse for another weak performance by the defense and special teams!  Where are the turnovers, the pick sixes, and the fumble returns?  Is it too much to ask for an occasional safety?  What’s with Crick?  Falls right on the ball and let’s it get away.  Duh, ever think about returning a punt or kickoff!  Please explain why Fisher goes out of bounds after picking up the blocked field goal attempt and only returns it 50 yards when he should have scored.  Why block a PAT if you’re not going to get two going the other way.  Lack of defensive and special teams scoring shows a clear lack of emphasis by the coaching staff which needs to be corrected immediately if we are to salvage this season.  Jeez!  Get-it-together guys.

Wy,

I couldn’t disagree more with your comment on the defensive effort. The defense erased 4 points from ISU’s board. In my mind, that’s essentially the same as scoring. So if you look at it that way, the defense scored 2/3 the amount of points the offense scored. That defense can hang with pretty much anyone in the country. The problem is, our offense isn’t putting any pressure on the other team by it’s inability to score. Don’t underestimate how that can change the other team’s playcalling.

Dwayne,

Maybe we should ask Wy to take his tongue out of his cheek.  Pretty funny though.  It is time for the youth movement to commence.  Zac could be the best mentor, and back up in the nation, as Cody learns to play at this level.  Put Trey Robinson in at I-Back.  Hell, if Rex were healthy, I would use him as the next Rex Welker, running and grabbing.  We got nothin’ left to lose now!  Watson should let his imagination run wild.  God only knows up to now, nothing has worked.

Coach Pelini said that Helu’s uncharacteristic fumbling problems were not due to injury but I’ve got to wonder if Helu isn’t hurt then why did he only get five carries.  Helu’s injury really worries me because he is our most reliable offensive weapon.

The defense has earned their bread yesterday and for the entire the entire year thus far year.  I don’t think that anyone should be critical of them thus far, or for that matter be critical of them using any objectivity.  They’ve just been fantastic this year. . .

I’m happy for Robinson.  I thought that he looked very good on film in high school and at the time we got him a good bit of people were saying that we didn’t beat out too many elite school for him implying that we might have used poor judgement in offering him a scholarship.  He’s going to be a very good IB for us.  This coaching staff found Robinson and Dennard when some people were wondering why we were going after them.  My goodness can Coach Bo & Carl Pelini can coach some defense. . .

We should think about going under center, running out of the I, power packages and establishing an identity on the ground.  This bunch isn’t fundamentally sound enough to execute a multiple offense.  They haven’t looked too bad under center so far this year.  Slow the game down and give these guys a chance to get an identity.  And we really need a leader to step up.  Problem is I don’t know who that will be.  Never seen a football team go a whole season without having a leader in a unit.  Our defense has Suh.  Our offense?  Remains to be seen, and that’s IF somebody steps up. . .

Well I have to say it. Barrney Cotton is the worst coach since cosgrove. Our lineman look bigger and stronger. So why aren’t they knocking anyone off the ball. Piss poor coaching. Missing blocking assingments? This guy has failed everywhere he has gone. We need a coach that can get some technique. Look what it has done on the otherside of the ball. Crick has come from nowhere. He has a coach that can teach him something. i know suh is next to him but give Crick some credit. He will do just fine next year. Why because carl will coach the guys next to him. Fire Cotton bring back the PIPELINE

If you look at the drive in the third quarter where Robinson fumbled, NU looked pretty good. It’s not coaching in my mind. It’s situational play calling. During the telecast the sideline reporter had mentioned that NU’s Cotton was talking about committing to running. I like the WCO, but I’m beginning to wonder if the versatility is hampering the offense instead of assisting it.
