Who Backs Up Martinez
Now that Taylor Martinez should avoid the questions of his starter worthiness heading into this year, there is likely a QB battle for his potential backup. The quarterbacks listed on Huskers.com are Tommy Armstrong Jr. (6'1", 215, Fr.), Tyson Broekmeier (6'1", 190 RFr.), Brion Carnes (6'1", 200, So.), Ryker Fyfe (6'2", 180, Fr.), Ron Kellogg III (6'1", 210, Jr.), and Bronson Marsh (6'0", 195, RFr.). Bo Pelini indicated at one point that Marsh had seen a little bit of time at defensive back, which means that he is a good enough athlete that they want to try and get him out on the field as much as possible. By virtue of seniority and experience Carnes has played in 3 games, while Kellogg is the only other Junior next to Martinez. Before the season began, most assumed that it was Martinez, Carnes, and Kellogg. There have been positive comments about Armstrong, so it remains to be seen whether or not he can crack the two deep or if he gets to see the field at all this year. Backup QB is one of those positions that usually only see the field in case of injury or cleanup time, so it would be better off it one of the older or more experienced players actually gets their shot.

Let’s just hope that we don’t have to find out during the season unless it’s in mop-up duty.

I’m hoping there’s LOTS of mop-up duty. Bring in the custodians!

Looking at past history all those backup guys better by some ball caps and clipboards

It’s not unreasonable for a backup to take some mop up duty, especially if they do well in the non-conference. But we also know that there have been injuries that lead to a backup starting a game. I just want to avoid Rex Burkhead playing wildcat for 3 quarters of some game because we can’t trust a backup.

Isnt Brion Carnes a Redshirt Sophmore??

Yes, both Martinez and Kellogg are redshirt juniors, but that distinction is not usually indicated in rosters and such.

Let’s face it, Tommy Armstrong, Jr. is the next star at QB. I haven’t seen or heard anything about Brion for some time. I’d love to see what Brion can do, given the chance but, I get the feeling TA, Jr. is Beck’s boy.
