Spartans Will Lean on Defense
Michigan State is predicted to be the consensus number 2 in the Legends division based on the media and football gurus. Our esteemed colleague Steve asked, What's So Great About Michigan State? The losses of offensive talent and a couple of spots on the D-line lead some to believe they should be behind both Michigan and Nebraska. But, the back seven has a great amount of experience and defense returns 8 overall. Opponent scores might be in the 18-22 range. Members of the Spartans have their sights set on the Rose Bowl, and with their defense it can be done. But they will have to get through a treacherous middle of the conference slate. Iowa for homecoming, then two tough road games against Michigan and Wisconsin. Both of those teams will be coming off softer opponents. The Spartans may be drained by the time the Huskers roll into town.

“The Spartans may be drained by the time they roll into Lincoln.” I think you meant the Spartans might be drained when the Huskers visit them on 11/3. I recall the Huskers beating MSU @ Nebraska last year :)

I don’t know, but I’m just not too worried about Michigan State. I wasn’t last year either and they had a much better team than they’re going to have this year. it’s Michigan State for Gods sake…they’ve been good for how long? 2 years? So why are they ranked higher than the Huskers? They are breaking in a new QB and have lost a LOT of offensive firepower, not to mention several O linemen. Yes they do have a good running back, but only one. On paper, they can’t hold a candle to the Huskers. Not worried at all. We beat them fair and square in Lincoln last year by 3 TD’s so why does everyone think they’ll have a better chance of beating us this year? Because they’ve got a good defense? Defense wins championships yes, if you can get there. What’s left out of that equasion is the fact that it takes a good offense to get you there. And they aint got it.

I liked our chances with Wisco and OSU better than MSU. Should make for a good game. Can’t wait, 10 more days!

Thanks Steve, never write sentences late at night. Fixed it.

I dont understand why everyone is so high on MSU. Sure the D will be good but as pointed out above the lose a lot of offensive talent which only put up 3 on us last year. I just dont understand why people think their going to finish ahead of us.

Michigan St. is a good team. Yes, they have never defeated Nebraska but that is precisely why they should not be overlooked. We are going to play them in their house this year and they’re going to be chomping at the bit to get a win against Big Red. They figured out ways to defeat Wisconsin and Michigan and Ohio St. You can bet they are putting their heads together to chalk up something other than a goose egg in the ‘W’ column in their history against the boys from Lincoln.

I think MSU is undefeated at home the last 3 years. They are very good at home. To me, this will be our toughest road game and toughest game of the year - be it home or away.

Sorry… but this is what I always think of when I think of Michigan St football. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cPumEWNhjo
Not even Saban could stop it.
BTW, check out James Sims at 5:06.
80 yard TD run… remember when our 4th string back was that good?

steve, MSU did not lose at home in 2010 or 2011. But in ‘09 they lost to Central Michigan, Iowa, and Penn State at home.

Michigan St., Good Defense, yes against poor competition, checkout the stats against good competition and their D was nto so good…granted they seem to be tough at home, but we were once upon a time tough on the road….this is another game that could go either way, along with Mich, OSU, and Bucky…we need to step up our game, the B1G is for the taking.

If MSU will be leaning on their defense…I guess that will make it unaminous….since, I expect, we’ll be leaning on their defense too.

If reports are to be believed, it should be easy for everyone to remember when our 4th string back was that good, as our four-deep at RB is outstanding.

I think the talent might be there, Matt… but nobody but Rex has shown (or been given the chance to show) that they are the real deal.
We talk about Abdullah like he is a sure thing at this point, but he only carried 42 times for 172 yards last year. Running from scrimmage is a different thing that returning kicks.
I’m not saying that he isn’t the real deal… or that the others (Heard, Cross) can’t play too… I’m just saying that we don’t have much to go on at this point, other than Abdullah’s 3.6 YPA and a few timely fumbles.
I hope you are right!

I think our Achilles heel has always been a mobile qb.. that’s why I’m most scared by Michigan and believe it or not northwestern.. I know little about the new Mich state kid but saw an article saying he’s similar to cousins.. I think if he’s not a mobile qb we win pretty good otherwise its a toss up
