Quarterbacks in Recruit Class Set for Huskers
The Huskers have a strong commitment from dual threat quarterback Tommy Armstrong of Texas. Walk on prospect Ryker Fyfe will add a positive dynamic to the depth chart and push for playing time with a pro-style approach. Although it was a surprise that Devin Fuller ended up committing to UCLA after Rutgers coach Greg Schiano decided to jump to the NFL, it was not necessarily a surprise that he did not pick Nebraska. It would have been interesting to see a top 50 type of player compete for QB playing time for the Huskers, but Fuller may have seen the log jam at the position and decided Bo Pelini would have wanted his talent on the defensive side of the ball.

Here’s what the services are saying about Armstrong:
247sports 6’1”/200 - 3* - 86/100
ESPN 6’1”/195 - 3* - 77/100
Rivals 6’2”/210 - 3* - 5.7/6.0
Scout 6’1.5”/205 - 4*
All of the services have him running around a 4.53 40 and list him anywhere from the number 5 to number 10 quarterback recruit in the nation.

Armstrong will be battling for a starting spot at QB within 2 years. Personally, it would of been nice to get Fuller but Tommy Armstrong will be a bit part of Husker football the next 4 years. I hope Devin Fuller has a nice 4 years at UCLA.
If Bo really does allow for a true open competition for the starting QB Brion will will be our starting QB either at the beginning of next season or within a few games of the opener. Sorry, didn’t mean to change the conversation.

To continue my thoughts on this matter:
We really could use a good QB coach with the qualities of a Turner Gill or a Tommy Frazier so that they could actually help develop our QB’s to their best potential. If T-mart could of had that kind of coach that really worked with his passing form, etc. at the beginning of his days as a Husker then T-Mart would be light years ahead of where he is now.

Mark from VA: So your saying that Shawn Watson/Tim Beck weren’t good QB coaches? I didn’t like SW as an OC, but I doubt many think he was a poor QB coach. The Gabberts would disagree at least :)
I think there was just an unwillingness to change his throwing motion and there was an immediate need for offense, thus the selection of TMart. I think he could be beat out in the future, but each year he starts it’s more and more unlikely. He starts next year (barring injury) and then again senior year unless serious competition runs him out of the program. I thought he made some good progress last year. If we could take the leg-cuffs off and have him be dual threat again with another offseason of work, he could return to form and be a true threat in Beck’s offense.

So we have:
Martinez
Carnes
Kellogg
Armstrong
Fyfe
What will be the starting order at the beginning of the season? end? Is there hope for Kellogg or Fyfe? Will Carnes step up, be overtaken, transfer, or be happy with the bench? Will anyone besides Martinez see playing time?

Forgot to mention Turner

Ty Hughes: If Brion has finally reached the point where he completely understands the play book then he will win the starting QB spot, if given an even chance to compete. Watson & Beck are OC’s not position coaches and run the entire O and really don’t have a lot of time to coach T-mart one-on-one. Where as a QB position coach would have that time available to help build
T-mart and other husker QB’s. That’s all I’m saying.

Both WERE QB coaches though.

Ty Hughes: Your are correct, all I’m saying is that as OC’s most of their time is spent covering the entire O where as a position coach can spend all their time with their QB’s. A position coach could of spent a lot of time working on T-marts throwing fundamentals.

You do realize Tommy Fraziers stint as head coach was a total bust dont you ( coached at Doane, and almost ruined the program) ?? You also realize Tommy Frazier had a sub 50% career passing percentage.. His best year was 55.4% which was his senior year.. Before that he was under 50% the previous 3 years.. That dosnt make much sense for a guy that couldnt pass worth a lick to come in and miraculously teach some other guy to pass… ?

You would think, since Nebraska football profits nearly $3 million each and every MONTH…they could go out and get a QB coach and a top flight O line coach. That would have helped Taylor tons and helped our football team immensely. An OC is NOT a QB coach. Other positions have their coaches, why not QB? Maybe if we had, Carnes would be better developed freeing up the coaching staff to take off the leg irons they have on Martinez because they are so afraid of getting him hurt. From what we saw of Carnes at the Red and White game, he should be more developed by now. That’s really hurt us I think. Other teams know we don’t have any depth at QB so they know we are not going to let him loose due to the fact that we simply can’t afford to get him hurt. It’s killed his effectiveness. They’ve taken the teeth out of one of our best threats. I remember in early 2010 - coached by Sean Watson btw - people were talking about Taylor getting Heisman attention and us as National Championship contenders. We were unstoppable.
