Blogpoll Ballot - Week 5

Here again we present the Big Red Network ballot for the college football top 25 poll at M Go Blog. With a slew of losses to undefeated teams, the to 25 changes dramatically. The Sooners are now the top team with defending champion LSU right behind.

Nick Saban appears to be earning that big contract with a big win over Georgia. The Red River Shootout between Texas and OU is now shaping up to be a huge game nationally. Apologies to Northwestern for the doubts, with their win over Iowa they are undefeated at 5-0. I've still got undefeated teams over losers. But the field of unbeatens has shrunk to where seven teams with losses are ranked. Here's the list:

1. Oklahoma
2. LSU
3. Texas
4. Alabama
5. Mizzou
6. Penn State
7. South Florida
8. BYU
9. Texas Tech
10. Utah
11. Vanderbilt
12. Boise State
13. Oklahoma State
14. Connecticut
15. Kentucky
16. Northwestern
17. Ball State
18. Tulsa
19. Maryland
20. Georgia
21. Oregon
22. Virginia Tech
23. Southern Cal
24. Ohio State
25. Auburn

Thanks for the laugh this morning. This has to be one of the funniest polls I have ever seen. Let me see if I have this right… you have Boise St., Ball St, Tulsa, and Maryland (a team that lost to Middle TN St) ahead of Virginia Tech, Georgia, USC, Ohio St., and Auburn. This is just too funny. ;)

I’ve taken the position that teams have to earn their rankings with wins THIS YEAR.  How many people wanted to forgive West Virginia their first loss only to see them go down again.  Same thing with Illinois.  The “earn it” method avoids that.

Boise State is ranked 17th in the AP poll, so I’m not sure why 12th is so offensive.  They won at Oregon, who you didn’t quibble about seeing ranked 21st.  The coaches’ poll ranked Oregon 20th.

Ball State is one of only six teams to go 5-0.  But I still put sixteen teams ahead of them.  Look at their schedule.  They may not lose a regular season game this year.  If Tulsa gets by Arkansas on the road, the same may be true there as well.  Both of those teams are in the top 30 of the AP rankings.

Have you seen the Terps since that bad loss?  They’ve beaten two ranked teams including one on the road.  There’s a night and day difference between what we saw against MTSU and what we saw against Cal and Clemson.

Every game Va. Tech played (except Furman) was about a play away from being a loss.  But they beat some good teams and deserve some props for that.  Georgia hasn’t beaten teams as good as Maryland has.  USC has won two games.  The Ohio State game was good (though Wells was injuried) and we now know that Virginia is horrible.  So the Trojans haven’t done much to earn a high ranking THIS YEAR.  Ohio State can’t really claim a higher ranking than the Trojans and also had that bad outing against 1-4 Ohio (sorry Frank).  Auburn’s offense is horrific.  They won a game by scoring 3 points and another over a sorry Tennessee team with a fumble recovery in the end zone otherwise they’d also have been in single digits.  How can they expect to beat Vandy, Arkansas, West Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama with an offense that bad?  Twenty-fifth might be kind.
