“Mobile Home Key Words at Texas A&M
Previewing Texas A&M
Facing the Aggies in College Station is never easy. Texas A&M has a long tradition of giving teams trouble in their stadium. In 1998, the Aggies ended Nebraska's 19 game win streak when the Huskers came to town. Mobile quarterbacks are no picnic either. Even in the best of times (like Nebraska's five-year 60-3 run in the mid 1990's), mobile quarterbacks have given the Husker's fits. Charlie Ward, Jake Plummer, James Brown, and Corby Jones were all quarterbacks who managed to lead their team to victory (or near victory) against those storied Husker teams. Stephen McGee, Texas A&M's sophomore quarterback, is as mobile as they come, averaging 5.5 yards rushing a year ago. With the “Mobile Home factors in full effect, the Huskers take the November 11 visit to College Station lightly at their peril.
Sure home field advantage isn't everything. What has it done for Baylor in the last ten years? Nebraska even managed a win at College Station in 2002 in what was an otherwise bad year for Husker football. Still, road games in the Big XII are usually tough to win.
Mobility isn't everything either. Reggie McNeal, the starter the last time the Huskers faced the Aggies, was the architect of a 48-12 meltdown in Lincoln. He led the Aggies in rushing in 2005, sporting a 6.9 yards per carry average in a season that saw A&M finish 5-6. Then again, imagine where the Aggies might have finished without him.
But then there's talent. While Texas and Oklahoma have been the class of the conference when it comes to recruiting, A&M has ranked as high or higher than any other team in the Big XII over the last four or five years. So it's not a matter of walking on the field and pounding a lightweight for Nebraska. They have to beat a team with comparable talent straight up on their field.
If the game were played today, I imagine oddsmakers would list the Huskers as favorites. But a lot can happen between now and November. The Huskers could well be facing a seasoned, confident opponent in a very hostile environment. A&M head coach Dennis Franchione had better hope so or else the Aggies could well be bringing a new head coach with them to Lincoln in 2007. This contest could well be the difference between either team playing in the Big XII championship game and sitting at home.
Or if A&M cannot improve from 2005, it might just be another bad loss for the Aggies. The Aggies lost a lot to graduation and must find a way to compete with the better teams on its schedule with a lot of new faces in the starting lineup.
Either way, the “Mobile Home elements means it is a game the Huskers cannot afford to overlook. Even if the words “mobile home brings to mind other aspects of Texas A&M (like an offensive line coach named Jim Bob Helduser). What matters is that the Huskers drive away with a win, and not get Winnebagoed.

A&M lost “a lot,” huh? Other than Reggie McNeal, what, exactly was lost? One WR, one DL and one DB? Way to do your homework. And when discussing trailer parks, tread lightly; remember, you are from…Nebraska.
8/14/2006
It’s a bit more than that (but I might not have said it if A&M didn’t lose a 3-year starter at quarterback):
Offensive Starters Lost (4)
QB Reggie McNeal (Three-year starter)
OL Dominique Steamer (19 career starts)
WR Jason Carter (Led the team with 827
receiving yards)
WR Deqawn Mobley (252 receiving yards)
Defensive Starters Lost (5)
DL Johnny Jolly (Led team with 11.5
tackles for a loss of 58 yards)
LB Lee Foliaki (45 tackles, 15 solo)
LB Archie McDaniel (10 starts in 2005)
CB Ronald Jones (18 career starts)
DB Jaxson Appel (43 career starts)
Specialists Lost (1)
PK Todd Pegram (Made 56-of-75 attempts)

Sean,
The posted comment did not refer to “trailer home”. Maybe next time you should read the article before replying. “Mobile Home” was just this author’s way of saying A&M has a mobile QB and home field advantage. Calm down buddy.
8/14/2006
You already mentioned losing McNeal. The “a lot” seemed to be referring to everyone else. As I said, A&M lost on WR (Carter), one DL (Jolly), and one DB (Appel) of note.
Steamer and Mobley were non-factors last year (Mobley never really played after the CU game; Steamer lost his starting job before the season). McDaniel wouldn’t have played much this year anyway with the switch to the 4-2-5. Foliaki missed much a of last year with injury. Ronald Jones didn’t play quality minutes in any game after conference play began. You’ve got me on the kicker, though I doubt the Aggies will miss him much.
Way to avoid the mobile home comment, though.
8/14/2006
Sean,
I challenge you to find me one Husker assistant coach at Nebraska named Jim Bob.
8/14/2006
Because a variation on the name “James Robert” is indicative of trailer trash but the giant inflatable hayseed on the NU sideline isn’t?
Grant: maybe you should read closely before posting. I wasn’t talking about the mobile QB part, but the “Even if the words ‘mobile home’ brings to mind other aspects of Texas A&M” part.
8/14/2006
Sean,
Lighten up, I was just having a laugh at an assistant coach’s goofy name. I did the same thing when Kansas State had a receiver on scholarship named Taco Wallace (his brother Chalupa walked-on etc. etc.). Really though, Jim Bob? Come on.
8/14/2006
I dig the terms. This is going to be a really big game. As many people say we lose 3 inculding USC TEJAS and maybe a&m. Do the fans get to make out when we score on a&m?
8/14/2006
Omarhuskerfan,
IF the Huskers score, you hereby have permission to mug with your date. If it’s a bad day for your team, substitute 1st downs for scores. That’s what we did in the day before Sherrill.
8/14/2006
You also did not mention that we are returning 20 starters (although some of the leading magazines say 13-15. They did not consider that we have returning players who were out last season with injuries. Fact is, we have a lot of returning young talent with game experience.
8/14/2006
Seemed like a nice article to me. Sean has a point—we didn’t really lose that many key guys, aside from Appel and Jolly—but the rest of the article seemed spot-on.
Good work.
8/14/2006
back to what sean said up there about not losing anybody… DD (dominique steamer) started several games last year… the last 6 games in conference play to be exact… so ya he was a factor…
8/14/2006
sounds like he was just makin some harmless jokes…about losing starters though i think Sean has ya….losing reggie was only big depending on who you talk to…i think this game will be good…lookin forward to November 11th…i will be in the stands
8/14/2006
Let it go Sean, No use getting upset with a guy who comes from lincoln, trust me. Having been born in Neb and getting to Texas as fast as I could, I know how many mobil homes there are in Neb. And Trailer homes at that! Hanway has got nothing better to do than to make fun of some guy who is smarter, actually played football, and who is very sucessfull. Really is not like a husker fan at all so I would pay him no mind.
8/14/2006
What do you expect from a guy who spends time researching the assistant coaches’ names? With the advent of the internet came thousands of “journalists” who now have a platform for their useless drivel. It’s like this guy came up with the idea, then found out that NU had beaten us the last time we faced off with a mobile QB and the last time they faced us in College Station, but stuck with the theme anyway, just to take a shot at Coach Helduser and Aggies in general.
Maybe Steve should drive up to Waterloo for a steak at Jim Bob’s Gourmet, Inc. I guess they have Jim Bob’s in Nebraska, too.
8/15/2006
Unfortunately, Reggie was a cancer for ATM. I liked him in the beginning but he really didn’t play up to his potential b/c of some problems with the team/coaches. I was surprised to hear about “mobile homes” from a school that I thought had class. We’ll see what happens this year.
8/15/2006
Pretty decent article, except for the weak attempt to implicate Aggies as trailer trash solely because an A&M coach has a hick name. Let me remind you that Helduser did not attend A&M; he is merely a coach. How wise it to attempt to criticize a university of 45,000 students because a position coach has a funny name? How many people even know the name of position coaches on other teams? Most Husker fans that I’ve met have been good, respectful fans. Maybe you will avoid using tacky references, which I am sure you think are somehow cute and funny, in future articles. It would give you a much higher degree of legitimacy. You do realize that A&M’s endowment is 5 billion dollars, which is almost 28 times greater than NU’s endowment of 179.8 million? Somehow, a school with a coach named Jim Bob is consistently ranked much higher than the “Big Red”.
8/15/2006
It’s almost like the guy had to strain to come up with a way to write an article associating Texas A&M with mobile homes.
The article does nothing if not point out the ignorance of the writer. College Station is a relatively affluent city, with a university that is one of the crown jewels of the nation’s research capacity. To any educated person, Texas A&M stands for the pursuit of excellence, without that being a cliche. It is one of the richest, largest, and most productive institutions in our country.
But Nebraska has some good sports teams. yea.
8/15/2006
The thing most of you are missing here is that these players we ‘lost’ are being replaced by more talented players. Look at our last few recruiting classes. We’ll be fine. I’m looking forward to this game.
8/15/2006
Well I’ve certainly learned my lesson:
You don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with Jim Bob
But really, if it’s so unseemly to pick on ol’ Jim Bob’s name, why not one single comment in defense of Taco Wallace?
8/15/2006
Man… D E F E N S I V E! I have never seen so many fans get so defensive over a couple small jokes about the area. He even praises your team in the article. Believe me as Husker Fans, we hear it all the time. Just smile, laugh and take care of your business on the field. I can almost see all of your faces turning red as you type. Chill out! If you have read most of Steve’s articles, that is his humor. After all, one of his goals is to get a reaction out of his readers ... I think he succeeded!
See you November 11; I know the Husker Nation is looking forward to it.
8/15/2006
Calm down Ags, overall, if you read the article it is pretty complimentary about our QB and our home field advantage even though we haven’t really had one in a while. Taco and Jim Bob are both funny names. Stop taking everything so seriously. He could be poking fun at our crappy defense from last year. At least this way we can all laugh. This should be a great game. Let’s hope we are both undefeated when we meet.
Gig ‘em

“Me thinks he doth protest too much”...
In other words - did somebody get hit a little too close to the heart?
Or as a comedian once put it - stereotypes are funny because they are true. Jeez, chill out. It was a play on words. And, you are from the south. You have a coach named Jim Bob. It’s funny. Have the courage to laugh at yourself a little bit.
Btw, I thought Steve wrote a pretty positive preview for the Aggies. Oh, that IS your mascot, right? Or is that collie you have on the sidelines? That always confused me. Somebody please explain. I’m not knocking it. Seriously, I’m just asking.
We have a guy in overalls holding a corn cob as a mascot. I can relate to that, since I grew up working in cornfields. But, anyway…
8/15/2006
mascot - a person, animal, or object adopted by a group as a symbolic figure esp. to bring them luck.
It’s called a dictionary, use one sometime.
Alabama is the crimson tide, they have a person in an elephant costume!
You must be easily confused.
You’re right, stereotypes are funny!
All that aside, Aggies and Huskers are both farmer types . . . we should all get along!
8/15/2006
Steve,
I liked the article. Nice job. However, you made a comment questioning how A&M would have faired without Reggie. I think we’ll get that answer this year and many will be surprised to see a quite different Aggie team with Stephen McGee at the helm.
Darren: Yes. We are the Aggies, as we’ve been know pretty much since the inception of the University (College, back then) because of the Agricultural and Mechanical subject matter taught at the school.
And, Yes. Our “Mascot” is an American Collie, Reveille, who happens to hold the highest rank in the Corps of Cadets and roams the sidelines of every Fightin’ Texas Aggie football game.
8/15/2006
Gig ‘em!!!
Nice piece by Steve H. We should be more competitive this year…let me rephrase, we BETTER be better this year!
Should be a great game in November when Big Red comes to Kyle Field; hopefully both teams will have stellar records and it will be a clean and polished-played game.
Good luck to the Husker Nation on Sept 16 as you travel to play USC…
Ahhhh yes, football season is once again upon us!!!!!
We’ll see you in College Station!!!
8/15/2006
To answer your question Darren, the collie, Reveille VII, is the mascot. The word “Aggies” just refers to the fact that Texas A&M University used to be “Texas AGRICULTURAL and Mechanical College”. Now the A&M doesn’t mean anything, but either way Aggies comes from the word agricultural. There are other schools that are refered to as Aggies, such as New Mexico State and Utah State, but their mascots are Pistol Pete and Big Blue.
If you want to know about Reveille, Reveile I came to Texas A&M in 1931 when some corps guys found a dog while driving back to school. They took her to their dorms and cared for her. She got her name and became the mascot the next morning when she woke up and barked when “Reveille” was blown by the buglar. Reveille III was the first one to be a purebread collie. Today, she is highest ranking member of the Corps.

Howdy. Looking forward to the game this year and sending you home with a loss ;)
Speaking of mascots- Be sure to bring your oversized Cornhusker blowup doll to Kyle this year. That thing always cracked me up.
In all seriousness, hope many of you make the trip and join us for tailgating and good times on Northgate after the game.

I am certain Reggie is not an architect
ar·chi·tect
1. One who designs and supervises the construction of buildings or other large structures.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architect
I have come to understand the use of the word in today’s modern translation, but is a MISUSE of the word. People work very hard to earn that title.
8/15/2006
I thought the article was good. Steve made some very good points and for the most part was right on. We did lose Reggie who was one of the best QB’s we have ever had at this school. He reminds me of a quarterback we had back in 80’s named Kevin Murray, a strong armed athletic qb that could make all the plays and he did it with style. But Kevin was never a leader just like Reggie wasn’t. After Kevin came Bucky Richardson who will probably go down as the most famous aggie qb of all time. Bucky wasn’t as fast as Kevin Murray and he didn’t have as strong an arm, he was tough as nails and was a leader on the football team and won more games than Kevin Murray ever did. Our current qb is just like Bucky, he is a leader on the feild and the guys respond to him. I feel we have upgraded at qb. To Husker fans we can’t wait to see you guys in November. Other than we Aggies, you guys have more class and know more about football than any other team in the big 12, maybe even the coutry. Should be a great game.
8/15/2006
I was in the 4th grade the last time a guy named Steve made fun of my name.
He barely survived the beating I gave him, so I made myself a promise that I’d let 100 insults to my name slide without repercussions, to match the number of bones I broke in Steve’s frame.
But if the 101st came and it was another guy named Steve, the fury of hell would be loosed upon him…wherever he was.
Guess what your article is?
I’m typing this on a plane enroute to Nebraska.
Nothing personal, but a promise is a promise.
8/15/2006
Steve
Aggies should be proud of your article and its resepect for the A&M program, especially regarding our home field advantage. No matter what we could all speculate regarding players that have not yet made their mark (qb McGee et. al.), the Aggie faithful will always make their presence known to visiting teams. On behalf of those faithfully filling a seat in section 108 on the west side of Kyle Field, thanks for the independent and realisitic view of a potentially great game.
8/15/2006
Jim Bob,
This is a special moment for all of us at the Big Red Network. The first threat of bodily harm (somebody take a picture). I’m thinking if I can be the 102nd as well maybe I’ll be in line for exciting bonus prizes, so how’s this:
If you look in the “Big Book of Redneck Names”, Jim Bob is the first name on the first page.
P.S. I’m not in Nebraska
8/15/2006
Jim Bob,
I think I was in the 4th grade the last time I let someone making fun of my name actually bother me.
I assume by the fact that you are in a plane means that you are not currently in the 5th grade and that these emotional scars are not new.
I can only hope you are being sarcastic and that you are truly not in that great a need of therapy.
8/15/2006
2 things:
steve - it’s big 12, not big XII (XII is just a logo).
darren - “aggie” is a nickname, the dog is a mascot.
...but what do i know, i used to live in a trailor park in college station.
8/15/2006
“I can only hope you are being sarcastic…”
Bingo.
Funny how journalists can make light of things and yet we’re supposed to know they’re only making light of things. But someone checks him with like sarcasm and he becomes defensive.
Maybe you should take that as a hint when it comes time to write your next piece.
P.S. In case you haven’t guessed it by now, my name isn’t Jim Bob and I’m not really on a plane.
8/15/2006
Jim Bob,
No one (except possibly Woodpile90) took your statement seriously (or even thought your name is actually Jim Bob - after all, then how would you have known how to operate a computer?). But I still had the “Big Book” joke in my pocket and you gave me the opening to use it.
Yours truly,
Taco Wallace
8/15/2006
ARCHITECT comes from Greek - ARCH “Highest” TECH “technitian”. So yes miss used when speaking of Reggie who through his spotty, moody play led us on the entire season only to figure out late that we were playing the wrong QB all along. McGee, to now, has shown he will be the ARCHITECT on the field that we need.
Good piece…cheap shot on the trailer homes theme, yet lets let it elegantly slide by.
Looking forward to Big Red in Kyle. Correct me if i’m wrong but, year after year, that has always been a great game. JW
8/15/2006
Well the chance of your name actually being Jim Bob was about 50%. This is the south afterall.
The possibility of you actually making a post from an airplane with some kind of super powered, bionic, 300mph WiFi - somewhere around 0%.
I think you took me a little too seriously.
