What’s Scary About Oklahoma State? 4 comments
Mike Gundy's coaching career at Oklahoma State has turned in a respectable 36-27 record over five years. With four straight winning seasons under his belt now, this streak looks to be tested. Now in his sixth year, Gundy will be fielding one of his least experienced teams to date. While possibly struggling to reach .500, it doesn't mean that they are not a dangerous team to face off against. They have some returning talent, along with a new high powered offensive coordinator, who could spell disaster for teams not wary of the potential threats the Cowboys bring to the table.

Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, Oklahoma State @ Oregon, San Diego Qualcomm Stadium, Dec. 30, 8 p.m. Eastern, ESPN
The name of this game will be offense. Oklahoma State gains 489 yards/game and 41 points/game. Oregon gains 478 yards/game and 41 points/game. Of that yardage, the Cowboys rush 256 and the Ducks rush 277. After Missouri's close game last night, I'm hoping to hear analysts shut up about how the Big 12 may not be that good offensively, but it could be that our defenses are bad. One of these teams will have to stop their opponent at least two times in order to win this game. OK State has the defense to quiet those commentators and win this game.
Huskerkill: Thurman Thomas 11 comments
Thurman Thomas had a Hall of Fame career as a running back for the Buffalo Bills. He played in four Super Bowls and five pro-bowls. Before that, he was a trash-talking All-American running back at Oklahoma State.
Big 12 Recruiting Roundup: Oklahoma State 1 comment
The Cowboys are another conference team that surpassed Nebraska in the Rivals.com rankings (#27 vs. #30) but lagged the Huskers in the Scout.com rankings (#40 vs. #21). Like Nebraska, OSU signed a large class but with eight junior college players in the mix, the Cowboys were downgraded by Scout.
Big 12 State of the Union: Oklahoma State 1 comment
Money can do a lot to help a football program. And thanks to Boone Pickens (and some other big donors), the Cowboys have plenty of it. Their team has the resources to compete with the better teams in the Big 12 and in recent years has done more winning than losing. But they haven't had a season of a 70% or better win percentage since Barry Sanders was in the backfield.
HUSKER UP: Oklahoma State 3 comments
As loyal readers know, the HUSKER UP series is designed to give fans that bolt of extra energy as they head in to the weekend. It's about getting pumped up for the game on Saturday. After last weeks bloodletting in Missouri, am I really going to put out a "rah rah shish boom bah" post this week? You are darn right I am. Don't delude yourself in to thinking you aren't going to attend, watch, listen to, or somehow follow the game, folks. You know you will. It's an addiction, a sickness, a way of life. Now more than ever, fans need to gird themselves for the remaining season. Steel your resolve. I think the Husker season hangs on the outcomes of these next two home games. Let's HUSKER UP!
He Said She Said 5 comments
What would Oklahoma State week be without some fun at Mike Gundy's expense? Unless you've been living under a rock you've seen Gundy's tirade about an article in the Oklahoman suggesting that a lack of toughness is the reason Bobby Reid lost his starting job earlier this year.
Sizing Up Oklahoma State (2007) 5 comments
The Cowboys have a good offense and yet not a single starter on the offensive line tops 300 lbs. Instead, they are all 290's and long (6'5+). They've got a big wide receiver in Adarius Bowman and a pair of small running backs in Dantrell Savage and Kendall Hunter.
2007 Opponent Preview…Oklahoma State 5 comments
You could put all of Oklahoma State's wins over Nebraska in Lincoln on a 6 hour VHS tape and still have 3 hours to spare. It was 1961 when the Cowboys came to Lincoln (before even VHS was available) and beat the Huskers 14-6, the only time they've ever done it. While history doesn't define the future (if not, how could you explain Bill Snyder's success at Kansas State), some trends can be hard to break.
Hitting the Wall 17 comments
It's close to midnight as I type and after a long day and evening of work, I am beat. All I can think of is when will I finally get a decent night's sleep (it won't be tonight). I suspect, I don't feel all to different mentally from how the Huskers felt travelling to Oklahoma State. After nine weeks without a bye, the Huskers were tired - and it showed. The Cowboys, on the other hand, had a bye a few weeks ago - and it showed too.
On Expectations: Acorns or Apocalypse? 6 comments
Nebraska lost last Saturday. Yes, it is disappointing. But, to hear some people, you'd think the sky is falling. Frankly, it feels a bit "henny penny" to me, with people spouting about the end of the world because of a few fallen acorns.
Don't get it twisted. Watching Saturday's game left a very bitter taste in my mouth. So much so that in the days that followed I had to take two mental steps back and ask why I was so dissatisfied. As it turns out, I think the team is performing about like we expected it to. The results so far reflect the known makeup of this team and the matchups in the the games they lost. And, really, NU is in line with people's expectations for the season record.
But what bothers me most is people being impatient and needing to draw conclusions before all of the results are in. Examining these expectations is helpful. And hopefully it will help people understand that the Nebraska sky is indeed still intact.
Huskers Stumble in Stillwater 6 comments
Remember how NU's coaches were thrilled to get wins on the road against Iowa State and Kansas State? Well, that was for good reason. Winning on the road in this conference is tough. Anyone not already understanding that got a big fat dose of reality Saturday when the Huskers dropped a game to Oklahoma State in Stillwater, 41-29. It started out well enough. But, some very poor second-half play by NU combined with OSU being a good offensive team led to a Husker loss on a day when they had a chance to put a hold on the Big 12 North lead.

Weather forecast for Stillwater 0 comments
Here's the forecast for today's game in Stillwater from our very own meteorologist, Renny Vandewege.
The Huskers head to Stillwater, Oklahoma, home of the Cowboys, Eskimo Joe's, and my favorite, Tornado Alley. There won't be any tornadoes around this trip. In fact, it looks as if weather won't be much of a factor at all.

The pocket guide makes a great companion if you're watching the game with buddies. You can do your best Cliff Claven from Cheers impression, "It's a little known fact that Nebraska has outscored OSU 358-117 in the past ten meetings."
So print out your pocket guide today. You can't find this anywhere else!

Correction: Diehard Cheers fans may have noticed that I mistakenly credited Norm for the "little known fact" saying, when in fact Cliff Claven was the know-it-all. I apologize to anyone who was offended by this oversight.
P.S. Norm!

On paper, the Cowboys are something of a mirror image of the Huskers. They have a highly efficient quarterback, a big receiver that's given defenses fits, a stable of running backs that contribute, a high scoring offense, and a big and talented defensive line. Sound familiar?

Previewing Oklahoma State
I won't sugar coat it. Oklahoma State was a bad football team in 2005. The Cowboys finished 4-7, going just 1-7 in the Big 12 conference. They struggled mightily on both sides of the ball, finishing near the bottom of the NCAA rankings in passing offense (98th) and passing defense (107th). And, their rushing and rush defense were not exactly stellar. But, there were reasons for the poor performance. First year coach Mike Gundy cleaned house when he arrived, and played many freshman on both sides of the ball. The inexperience and transition to new systems took its toll. For OSU to bounce back in the tough Big 12 South division, those young players will need to show they were tempered by last season's baptism by fire.
