With all the Big Ten news, injury updates, and the excitement of college football officially starting, it's almost easy to forget that Nebraska actually takes the field tomorrow evening for the first game of the season. That's right, Western Kentucky rolls into town, so it's not really a surprise that there were news bits that overshadowed this week's opponent. In case you've missed any of the important news of the week, here's what happened, as well as what to look for this weekend.

If you're looking for a one stop shop of all the Red White Game news you could find, look no further than clicking right here for the list of our latest stories about that topic. Let's go over a couple of the highlights today.

During spring practice, when competition is rife and coaches won't dare release a depth chart, we can gauge where players are at only based on the buzz surrounding their position battles. There is a lot being said about running backs behind Roy Helu, Jr, a few things about the Tight Ends now that Mike McNeill is an "Adjuster", and much about which cornerback will be filling in the hybrid or "peso" roll that has been talked about this week. And as much as Coach Bo Pelini wants to downplay some of this, we've got nothing better than to discuss backups and non-starters until April 17th.
The Weekly Buzz: Spring Practice Starts 1 comment
Huskerland and the Internet is exploding with all the new interesting tidbits brought on by the first day of Spring Practice. When trying to find a nice way to summarize everything that was going on, I realized I was facing an impossible task. So I waded through everything I could find bringing the most interesting pieces of news to be found from the first day of players taking the field with coaches. So to start things off, nothing is better than actually seeing Husker football players take the field for themselves, even if it is practice.

Huskers are dreaming big. There seems to be anticipation for this next season that hasn't been felt in Lincoln and around the country since the 90's. All of the Big 12 is in a state of flux this year, but NU is poised to make a move to the top. With the Huskers getting such wide reaching exposure because of their defensive efforts and the adventures of Ndamukong Suh last year, the coaches are trying to take advantage of having Nebraska in the forefront of people's minds right now. Let's hope this momentum keeps up.

Continuing your education beyond college is a very important topic to me. If you're not learning something new in this day and age, you're going backwards. Plenty of learning experiences have been happening this week, from coaches trying to find out just how others do what they do, to media trying to keep the lesson simple. Let's also not forget about people learning the odds, as they've found out just what Vegas thinks of the college football landscape next season.

Now that the recruiting news cycle has been replaced with the waiting game going into 7-on-7 drills and spring football practice, you'd think there wasn't much to talk about. Like its fans, the athletic department and football team never sleeps when it comes to keeping active during the off season. Bo Pelini is now the fifth highest paid head coach in the Big 12. Thankfully, Rickey Thenarse will be having a busy spring rehabilitating instead of moving onto life after football. With the green jersey's coming off for quarterbacks, let's hope we don't have to see anyone else overcoming injury this spring.

Signing day's coming soon! Let's hope there's not any drama this year that hurts us. This is a small class, but there are some big prospects and in-state prospects that are being discussed all over right now. But Coach Bo Pelini is already thinking ahead, visiting juniors and getting a commitment for 2011. Tom Osborne is thinking ahead, getting the conference opener on Thursday night on EPSN. And you know us, we're thinking ahead too. We've already started looking at one of our non-conference opponents, and we've got a few more months to look at the rest of them.

One of the biggest recruits in the country is interested in the Huskers and we've got a good shot at making an impression. Let's hope Bo's got good dinner conversation. Well the young recruit may be interested, but Boise State doesn't appear to be at this time. An offer has been on the table, but no word on whether they're going to accept a 2-for-1 deal. Let's hope that Bo Pelini is just as interested in coaching the team then in 2015 as he is now.

There's only a few types of news stories that come out during this time of the year and they're usually bad. From our best players leaving for the NFL to guys having run-ins with the law, I usually expect the bad news to roll in during the summer. At least there weren't any major decommitments this week. But the real big buzz this week is the expectations that are already mounting for next year. Take a poll now and you'd think most people expect the Huskers to have the Big 12 wrapped up with a pretty bow on it in 2010.

So Texas loses Colt McCoy and loses the game. Nebraska was trying to take McCoy out of the Big 12 Championship game figuratively, but I guess 'Bama took it to a whole new literal level in the BCS Championship game. Deservedly so, the Tide rolls to the number one spot while Nebraska jumps up to end the season at 14. Much of what the Huskers did this year had to do with the great conditioning program as they were able to outplay many of their opponents late in games. Now with the season over, Zac Lee will be needing a different kind of conditioning as he prepares to rehab after surgery.

This week, Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson has been talking up his future at Nebraska with hopes for the upcoming year. It sounds like he thinks this offensive drought is just a blip for the Huskers and hopes to bring back the past couple of years that brought success in the form of the spread. But who's going to be running that offense? If we don't even know who is going to be playing against the WIldcats in the Holiday Bowl, I'm sure there's not going to be a lot of clarity into the off season unless we hear a definitive answer about who's starting from the coaching staff.

There has been a lot going on in just a short amount of time since the game last Saturday. Ndamukong Suh had the national stage and put on the type of performance that football fans should remember for years. With the spotlight, he solidified the reasoning that he'll need a Mack Truck to pick up all his hardware, and received an invitation to New York for the big one. I guess all that awesome defense and conservative offensive play-calling scared off a couple of the skill players this week, but the big boys in the trenches are still on board. You know who's not on board with the offense? Pretty much everyone else, as suggestions to fire Shawn Watson are reaching a high point.

First of all, if you want to know more than the announcers, experts, your friends, and everyone around you watching this week's Big 12 Championship game, there are two things you need to do. First read every article on this site from this week. Next ready every article tagged as Big 12 title game coverage in ESPN's blogging network and you'll be set. You will probably be the most expert person at the game, or watching the game, or thinking about the game wherever you are if you do those two things. They had too many good tidbits this week to call out individually in The Weekly Buzz. On to the show.

This week, the Huskers are playing a one-game playoff for the Big 12 North Division Championship. If playing Kansas State to win the division wasn't enough of a throwback, the Huskers have shown some sparks on the field in Power sets. The rushing attack has proved to be that something extra needed to win the last couple of weeks. Combined with the Ndamukong Suh led effort, and you've got an equation to beat the Wildcats this Saturday.

The Oklahoma game really brought on an influx of recruits. Seeing dominant performances from so many of our defensive players, along with the great atmosphere, really was a huge draw, bringing in our 11th-16th recruits. The major atmosphere this last weekend needs to be captured more often if we want to keep convincing high school players that this is the best place to play football. Bo Pelini wants to see it every home game from the fans. Beyond thinking about about the stadium, the coaches are trying to open up the offense and let 'er rip (it would help if we knew who the QB is going to be). But the away game this weekend is the focus of the coaches this weekend. Kansas may be having a down season, but they are a dangerous team at any time.

The news this week sure has been interesting. If so many people are complaining about the lack of prominence involved with the NU-OU rivalry the past couple of years, then why has this game received so much coverage from local, regional, and national media? The fact of the matter is, there are some great players on both sides of the ball and this figures to be just as important as ever for the direction of the Big 12 this year. Both teams have superb defenses that are getting lots of press, and both have quarterbacks that weren't being mentioned at the beginning of the year.

This week is all about seeing whether all the talk brought on by coaches will be backed up. They have consistently said that they are looking at every position on the field for potential changes. A freshman will probably get the nod, but it's not apparently the one everyone's hoping for. No matter who is leading our team on the field, it will be important to have a good showing down in Texas as the Huskers don't want to lose any traction in the recruiting battles out there right now. Baylor will not try and make it easy for us, but there are some questions marks around the Bears offense, and a quarterback change thrown into the mix.
The Weekly Buzz 4 comments
To put it bluntly, this has been a depressing week in Cornhusker football. We've had worse losses in the past, and we've had "personnel" troubles before including issues with injury and performance, but it just seems like no good news comes from Huskerland today. It's not all doom and gloom, but for the most part, everybody's down on Nebraska right now.

What an exciting week. It was like a dream over the weekend after that come from behind win against Missouri, and then everyone woke up on Monday and realized that there's a game to play on Saturday against another tough opponent. Texas Tech will be rolling into town with a quarterback controversy that (hopefully) distracts them from their duties on the field. Of course, I hope the biggest distraction is more a force of disruption - Ndamukong Suh.

So guess what, Nebraska played a game this week. Unfortunately, I am writing this article before the Huskers take the field against Missouri, so by the time you read this, the biggest "buzz-worthy" news of the week will have been covered in great length by all of your favorite writers here at Big Red Network. So for the time being, we're going to cover a little bit about the players that will have an impact on how this year shapes up.
The Weekly Buzz 2 comments
The "backup" defensive backfield was able to preform well against Louisiana, but missing a couple of starters will create a bigger challenge against a team that is passing the ball so well during the non-conference schedule. Preparing for a game against a top throwing threat is its own challenge, but to top it off, getting ready for a Thursday night presents its own set of issues. Nebraska may not be looking past this game, but with all that's been going on around the league this week, it's sure to keep fans excited for the rest of the season. If the game against the Tigers goes well, Nebraska could be thrust into a larger spotlight the following weeks.

Living in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area, I get a lot of sports talk radio geared towards Missouri, Kansas, and Kansas State. On Wednesday, a story about the Jayhawks was the topic on point. Not really much of a surprise, it was also a major topic all across the nation. So in case you haven't heard by now, there was a scuffle between Kansas basketball and football players on campus, with lots of eyewitnesses, photos from cell phone cameras, and police trying to sort everything out.

The biggest actual football news going on during this week was probably overshadowed by a young guy's indecision the past few days. There was probably some important piece of information about Nebraska and their preparation that nobody noticed. Everyone by now has heard about Collins Okafor, and it even almost distracted people from the fact that the Huskers are playing Virginia Tech this weekend. Well, maybe only for a few minutes.

Now that we're in our full week of real college football, we're finally getting some juicy stories coming out of the woodwork. This week has got our coaches being pretty open with their feelings about how the Huskers played this weekend. We also were able to see a boatload of young players hit the field for the first time as Huskers. I'm guessing some of those young guys were the inspiration needed to convince a couple of recruits that they want to be playing in front of the Sea of Red instead of anywhere else.
The Weekly Buzz 2 comments
Of all the stories going on this week, I think there's only one piece of information that's on everyone's minds. The Huskers play this week! If most of this stuff happens in the middle of the season, it would be described as "mundane". But because it's the first week of the football season, it's a big deal right now.

Welcome to the Thanksgiving Day Edition of the Weekly Buzz! I've planned nothing special at all, just wanted to say that I'm thankful for the readers who are so dedicated they are looking at this site on a day usually reserved for families and friends.
Texas A&M @ Texas » Mack Brown is rooting for a BCS upheaval. He needs to win this game with style points and a whole bunch of other things out of his control to happen for him. The Aggies have pulled upsets to ruin their season before, and they will try to do it again. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a chance that the Longhorns slip up here. Their average scoring is 17 points/game higher. They average 90 yards/game more. And their defense – unbelievable run stopping coupled with the fewest points/game allowed in the Big 12. They should be able to win with style here, 63-13.

After the two Big 12 games breakdown, this week's buzz is the wishful bowl opponents OMNIBUS edition!
Iowa State @ Kansas State » The defense of these two teams is so atrocious, they both fall below that 100th place mark in college football. As bad as the Wildcats are against the run, the Cyclones are as bad against the pass. Folks expecting a shootout between two teams averaging 34 (KSU) and 24 (ISU) points/game may get their wish because they're both allowing more than 35 points/game. For K State, this battle is for second to last in the Big 12. Iowa State is already considered the worst. They've won a combined 1 conference game. Both of these teams show flashes of athletic talent, but their coaches aren't keeping up with the rest of the conference or even division. Home team gets the advantage, Wildcats 42-30.
The Weekly Buzz 4 comments
Texas @ Kansas » The Jayhawk's chances of beating Texas this year are pretty slim. We all know how the Kansas State Wildcats have surprised the Longhorns a couple of times in the past few years, but this KU doesn't have that explosiveness. This Longhorn punishing defensive front four has held their opponents to 86 rush yards per game while averaging over 3 sacks per game. Combined with the Colt McCoy-led offense, they have been nearly impossible to stop or even just get by without too much damage. The Texas Tech last minute win against the Longhorns coupled with the Texas Tech blowout of KU points to a sound defeat of the Jayhawks. This game won't get away like the Red Raider blowout, but there shouldn't be any doubt into the second half. Texas wins 45-30.
The Weekly Buzz 10 comments
Baylor @ Texas » Baylor's improvement this year has been one of the surprises in the Big 12. No longer the bottom of the barrel, their quarterback has inspired them to new heights of not getting embarrassed. Texas, however, is still a frightening monster. They probably would have won last week had they been playing at home. Look for the Longhorns to bounce back from disappointment with a rout on Baylor, 52-20.
The Weekly Buzz 4 comments
Colorado @ Texas A&M » What happens when a stoppable force meets a movable object? I have no idea. The Aggies show signs of turning things around, where at the beginning of the season there appeared to be no hope. The Buffs are backsliding the farther along this season goes. They've averaged 12 points/game the last five and show no signs of increasing that number. Home field advantage is not necessary, but probably adds a score: Aggies win 27-13.

This week has two games that are intriguing on a national scale. Will Texas continue to roll through the toughest part of their schedule undefeated? Is the underdog Texas Tech ranked about 15 spots too high? Vegas oddsmakers seems to think so.
Texas Tech @ Kansas » This is the most even match you will see all year. These two team are almost neck and neck in many statistical categories including leading the league in interceptions. Both allow around 21 points/game and less than 360 yards/game each. Both of these teams rely heavily on their passing oriented offenses and their front four's ability to stop the run. Tech opponents are averaging less than 93 yards/game on the ground while the Jayhawks have held their opponents to less than 110. Even though Kansas is the home favorite right now, I say that the Red Raiders will pull an “upsetâ€? in the last stage of the game: 34-30 and Jayhawk fans go home sad.
The Weekly Buzz 0 comments
There are two really interesting match-ups this week, with two ranked teams from the North playing two ranked teams from the South. Until one of the underdog North teams can consistently take down a Texas or Oklahoma, they will continue to be teams that get looked over for bowl games and not gain the recognition they feel they deserve.
Texas Tech @ Texas A&M » The Red Raiders were a few key plays away from coming off a disappointing loss last week. It probably sobered them up to the possibility that anyone can win at anytime in this league. Texas A&M was able to get their highest point total of the year against an porous Kansas State defense last week. And they are the best pass defense in the league, but allowing 33 points a game negates that statistic. Tech should bounce back with 600 yards of production to defeat A&M 45-20.
The Weekly Buzz 2 comments
After seeing what the top teams in the league did to the bottom half last week, we'll start to see where the rest of them are divvied up. Is Oklahoma better than Texas? Is Missouri capable of slowing down the powerhouse offense of Oklahoma State? Which teams are moving up and which ones are sliding down? Don't agree with my assessments? Let me know.
Iowa State @ Baylor » At home, Iowa State took a ranked Kansas team to the wire, but were held down on their last drive attempt. On the road this year, they didn't hold up against Iowa and lost a shootout to UNLV. Baylor doesn't turn the ball over very much, and they have a pretty consistent rushing attack because of the legs of their quarterback, Robert Griffin. Baylor and Iowa State are both teams looking to be on the upswing, but where are they relative to each other? Both have mobile dangerous quarterbacks. Both are coming off losses to ranked opponents. I give the edge to the home team, da Bears, 30-28.
The Weekly Buzz 0 comments
This is the week that we get to see what the Big 12 is made of. Five ranked Big 12 teams start their seasons on the road. Of the underdog home teams, Kansas State and Nebraska have the likeliest possibility to pull out an upset. Prepare to get nothing accomplished as you sit in front of the TV all day watching Big 12 football.
Oklahoma @ Baylor » Do I even need to predict something here? Sooners take it easy and win 45-10.

There are so many interesting games happening, that this week's buzz is only going to cover what you should watch on Saturday. With the Huskers being a night game and all, you'll be able to check these out at your favorite beverage and food-providing establishment.
Virginia Tech @ Nebraska » This is by far the game of the week for myself and many others. In terms of seeing exactly what a team is made of, this ranks pretty high in importance. To get ranked, you have to play well, in prime time, on a national scale. As I predicted in another thread, I think we see a game that is still undecided going into the second half, but the Huskers should pull ahead to a 27-17 win.
The Weekly Buzz 4 comments
So, what's a Husker fan to do during a bye week? Glad you asked. If you're hurtin' to watch football, I've got some games for you.
Kansas State @ Louisville » The Wildcats have quite a bit of work left to do in order to stay competitive in the Big 12 this year. I know that they've had and unusual amount of success against Texas, but they very well might get rolled by KU, Missouri, and Nebraska this year. Louisville controlled the ball for over 41 minutes in the game, ran the ball down their throats, forced three turnovers, and held KSU to only 30 rushing yards.
The Weekly Buzz 6 comments
Arkansas @ Texas » This was looking to be one of my top games of the week, but it is being rescheduled for September 27, 2008 due to the approaching hurricane. Houston looks like it will be hit hardest and this game is the first of many to be rescheduled.
Iowa St @ Iowa » Could we see the end of Iowa State's cellar-dwelling days? The Big 12 North as a whole is looking like they will be more dangerous in the future. If Coach Gene Chizik calls a good game here, then Iowa State is no longer the gimme game that so many have come to expect.

Taking a new approach to the buzz again this week. You get the stories of the week plus my bonus coverage of the games to look out for this upcoming weekend!
First of all, Bo Pelini has a pretty big decision to make coming up since Andy Christensen was found not guilty of sexual assault. I don't envy the guy, and I can't even venture a guess as to what he should do. Let us know what you think over on Steve's article.
The Weekly Buzz: Watch These Games 2 comments
There are a few game this week that Husker fans have reason to watch. Some of our future opponents are at critical junctions in the first week of the season.
Missouri vs. Illinois » In my book, this is the game of the week, period. The Tigers have A LOT of pressure to win. By no means will the loser's season be over, but it will be an uphill climb from here on out. Missouri will have to have a short memory before going in to Big 12 play if they can't pull this one out. Illinois has the upper hand in that they're not expected to beat a National Championship contender right out of the gate. As any Husker fan knows, expectations are the harshest tools of fans and media alike.

This week in Husker Buzz: Watson moving upstairs, Christensen's life-changing week, former Husker game planning for this weekend, and congratulations are in order.
» Shawn Watson is moving to the press box. Watson believes that as offensive coordinator, he can view the game and better analyze the situation from up there. I don't think it's a bad idea, but I don't know if his being on the sideline would cause any positive benefit to the players or not. The "fire-up" coaches are already down there getting players ready to roll, no need to complicate things with another voice yelling on the sidelines.

This week's buzz was hard to narrow down to O-Line, physical play, the scrimmage, and the strange wrestling news. We're getting so close that it's hard to pick just a few items, but these things stuck out.
» The offensive line is impressing all around with it's depth, attitude, and ability to push the defense around. The buzz indicates that this unit may be the strength of the team with a shot at being one of the best in the Big 12. Ricky Henry is also getting recognition for pressuring Huff at the left guard position. This is great news. There will always be someone hurting at the line, and to be two deep is almost necessary in such a tough conference.

The buzz this week is all about Dixon getting the boot, Helu stealing some spotlight, and Nebraska being a team under the microscope this year.
» This week's top story is Kevin Dixon being kicked off the team for his bad behavior. Both the Lincoln Journal Star and the Big Red Network looked at the bright side of what happens when a great player gets the ax. Someone will now have an opportunity to step up and gain that necessary experience for the years ahead. While it would have been great to see him in the regular rotation, his loss will be one young player's gain. Out of all this is the impressive manner in which Bo Pelini has handled himself and the strict ways he has dealt with his players breaking the rules.
The Weekly Buzz 2 comments
The buzz this week includes Bo Pelini and Tom Osborne laying out hopes for the media in Lincoln, Bo gives his personal expectations on the Western Nebraska tour, fans are pumped to be meeting with them, and Todd Peterson is trying to steal our readers.
» Pelini and Osborne really lay out their hopes for the 2008 season. How will they evaluate progress at the end of the year? Very carefully. Osborne realizes that true evaluation will come in 3-4 years by looking at the development of recruited players. Let's hope Dr. Tom continues to be a resource for this staff as long as they need it.

Texas recruiting and Big 12 Media Days are on the radar this week, with a little hope that basketball may have as bright a future as football.
» In what was my favorite (non-Bo Pelini) interview of Big 12 media days, Mack Brown was asked his feelings about being the guy that "let" Chase Daniel go. His response was that there were around 350 Division I caliber recruits every year and he could only pick what he thought were the top 22. He said that meant he had more than 320 native Texans mad at him every year. Don't feel too bad for him though, he only gets to pick the BEST of those players. Nebraska is starting to reap the benefit of the high number of Texas recruits, picking up three young Texans this week alone: Nick Ash - offensive guard, Jesse Coffey - another offensive lineman, and Emerson Evans - defensive end.
The Weekly Buzz 0 comments
The buzz this week: high expectations surround Marlon Lucky, low expectations surround the rest of the team, and a congratulations to former Husker soccer players.
» A conference media poll picked Marlon Lucky for the preseason All-Big 12 team. Let's hope that Lucky can live up to the high expectations placed upon his shoulders. Regardless of my favoritism towards him, if he doesn't step up, there are plenty of Running Backs on this squad more than willing to take his place.
The Weekly Buzz 6 comments
The buzz this week: Cody Green, more Virginia Tech musings, and I read it on the Internet - so it must be true.
» The first of possibly many big name recruits to commit to Nebraska, this Texas Quarterback is big, fast, and accurate. Just as I said last week that it was too early to be worrying about getting guys like this, it is still too early to think that the big name players will just keep rolling in. It's still too early to think someone good won't commit and then de-commit. Can I say it enough? It's still too early.

Editor's Note: The Weekly Buzz is a new regular feature that will highlight the top stories of the week from around the web. If you only read one post a week, make it this one and you'll have your bases covered.
The buzz this week: Nebrasketball recruiting, football recruiting, Virginia Tech and Zac Taylor.
» The top story this week was Doc Sadler's efforts to pick up high profile recruits with great potential. Eshaunte "Bear" Jones from Indiana will likely be playing for Nebraska in 2008-2009 and Vander Joaquim has already committed for the 2009-2010 season. The young guys that Sadler is able to get on the team always look like future stars. Next year could be a breakout year in terms of talk around the basketball team. Could we see a bubble team?
