Stories about Baylor

Baylor Post-Mortem 11 comments

When Nebraska fans showed concern for Baylor because of the offensive production worries over the past few weeks, I started to worry. Everyone can say that there are no easy wins in the Big 12, but I disagree. Iowa State and Baylor should be easy wins, and were respectively not a win and not an easy win for the Huskers. But a win is a win is a win, so what do I have to complain about? Just a few things. We mostly saw the same Huskers take the field this weekend, which means good defense, and not so good offense. But there were a few wrinkles that were a glimmer of hope for the future, near and long term.

Win Over Baylor Still a Win and That’s About It 14 comments

Coming off of two consecutive losses and with the November schedule looming large in front of them, Nebraska almost desperately needed a win today over Baylor. And, they got it. Nebraska looked every bit like the stout defensive and offensively limited team they have been recently, but this time with a different quarterback at the controls. Every win is still a win, even in a fairly vacant stadium in Waco. But, Nebraska looked downright brutal on offense today.

Husker Fans Get Their Wish 14 comments

You asked for it, you got it. A true freshman was your starting quarterback and the result - one offensive touchdown. Add in the touchdown he provided Baylor and you net out at zero. That's not to say he didn't do some good things. But asking a freshman to make his first start on the road in a conference game, is asking an awful lot.

Will Either Team Score More than Ten Points? 9 comments

Yesterday, we discussed sort of a best case for scenario for Nebraska. Today, it might be the most likely scenario. Baylor hasn't scored more than ten points in three conference games. Nebraska was held to 10 or fewer in its past two games (both at home). Might we see another game, like Iowa State where each team has single digits on the scoreboard?

An Ethical Question 16 comments

OK, perhaps it's really a sportsmanship question, but a fun one to explore. Nebraska is favorite on the road against Baylor. The Huskers have been having offensive problems. One could argue that if they get rolling offensively, they might want to leave their starters in a bit longer both to build their confidence and to help them maintain a rhythm (in hopes of some carry over to the next game). The question is, at what point would running up the score too much?

Nebraska Opens as a Two Touchdown Favorite Over Baylor 9 comments

It's interesting to see Nebraska listed as a two-touchdown favorite on the road over Baylor, considering that that would require the Huskers to score at least two touchdowns. NU leads Baylor in about every major statistical category except one - turnover margin. And that's all because of Saturday's eight turnover debacle. The last time Nebraska turned it over so many times (that anyone would recall) was against Oklahoma in 1990. That was Tom Osborne's last loss to the Sooners and it wasn't pretty. OU won 45-10.

If You Think Nebraska’s Injuries are Bad… 4 comments

Nebraska fans cringed this past weekend as they saw three of NU's top defensive backs leave their last game before facing the spread offense of Missouri. But it could be worse. Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin was lost for the season this weekend with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. With Griffin out, Baylor probably also loses any realistic chance they had of playing in a bowl game this season.

Beware Baylor? Or Baylor Benign? 12 comments

This summer, on golf course patios and in coffee shops all around Nebraska, people are discussing next season's opponents. I know, because I get drawn in to many of these conversations. People talk about whether the road trip to Virginia Tech will be as tough as playing at, say, Penn State seven years ago. They wonder if the Huskers can exorcise some demons from recent trips to Columbia and Lawrence. They wonder if NU has narrowed the gap with Oklahoma at all. And, inevitably, talk turns to Baylor, and if it is the "trap" game on the Husker schedule in 2009. We ooh and aah over Robert Griffin. Terms like "resurgence" get thrown around. It starts to get a bit scary. Then, some voice of reason points out that this is still Baylor, after all. No doubt many of you have had this conversation. So, I've decided to bring that discussion to BRN. Lets examine the Bears. Are they worth worrying about? Or are they still toothless?

Huskers End Halftime Futility Streak 27 comments

Over the last decade, Husker fans have seen a number of hallowed and revered streaks come to an end. In 1998, the Huskers saw a 7-year home-winning streak come to an end, as well as nearly 30 seasons with fewer than 4 losses and just as many with wins over Kansas State, not to mention five straight 11-win seasons. In 2000, the Huskers lost their first game by a large margin in 4 years when the Sooners pounded Nebraska 31-14. In 2001, NU gave up the most points in their history in the regular season finale and 2002 brought the most conference losses since before Bob Devaney was head coach. In 2004, we saw a 35-year bowl streak end and in 2005 a long win streak over Kansas came to an end. The 2007 Nebraska defense set all kinds of futility marks for the Huskers, which is why it was so gratifying to see the Huskers end a nearly five-year streak of losses to teams they trailed at halftime.

Beware Briles and the Baylor Bears 7 comments

Did I really just write that headline? I did, didn't I? Well, I'm a sucker for alliteration. For those of you who aren't, you might want to at least consider the message. With so many people looking forward to November's games with Oklahoma and Kansas, it is important for Nebraska not to overlook this Saturday's game with the Baylor Bears.

Big 12 Recruiting Roundup:  Baylor 0 comments

Baylor's recruiting class looks like…a Baylor recruiting class. There is a four-star prep quarterback, a few junior college players, and about half of the class is two-star athletes.

Big 12 State of the Union:  Baylor 8 comments

Every time I do a series going around the Big 12, I ask myself the same question. “Should I even bother with Baylor? This year, they're on Nebraska's schedule, which might be reason enough to give them equal time. I admit, I had to look up who their new head coach was, but as I look at the resume, I think, “not a bad hire.
