  • RE: More Conference Expansion?
I don't think it would necessitate a 10 game conference schedule. It would essentially be 2 separate conferences with a designated 1st round playoff game (conf. championship game). So if the divisional record was all that mattered for determining the division winner, then you only need 7. If Wisconsin isn't in …more »

  • RE: Red State Blue State
    I enjoyed your puns.

  • RE: Penalties at Forefront of the Season
I was going to say the same thing as Tadedge, basically. Especially on the Pass Interference penalties. They are frustrating and they extend drives but I really think we just have to live with them. Bo said we're #1 in the country in pass efficiency defense during the last press conference. …more »

  • RE: Pelini Answers Questions About Offense
I thought the bit about Tim Beck "not being as aggressive passing as he would have liked" was interesting. I would guess that's because we killed ourselves throwing against Wisconsin when we didn't need to (my opinion). I could see that scaring anyone away from throwing too many passes. And it …more »

  • RE: If the Offensive Line is Any Good
It's just so hard to draw conclusions from numbers. Does Washington average more sacks than Wisconsin because their opponents pass more or because their defensive line is better? Shouldn't every team have had less sacks against us (but maybe more TFLs) because we run more and pass less than the average …more »

  • RE: Why Care About Tim Miles
Howard, during the press conference Tim Miles quoted an article written by a Duke grad which found that fans lead to winning more than winning leads to fans. He didn't say it was necessarily a universal truth but more as evidence that he plans to do whatever he can to increase …more »

  • RE: In Need of a Defensive Line
Great statistical work, Tom! I was going to say the same thing about David. In general, I'd make the point that while the percentages are a good indicator, they definitely don't tell the whole story. Remember how much we're told about the 2-gap technique, etc. and a lot of times the …more »

  • RE: A Brief History of Husker Recruiting: 1980-89
I'm kind of with Josh here. I didn't finish reading this article and think, "Oh man, Pelini is recruiting so much worse than TO". It's pretty hard to tell really since the data is pretty scarce. So I read this as much more of a look back at recruiting results vs. …more »

  • RE: Big Ten Reverses Course on Plus One
Great news. I have no problem with these proposals. I'm sure they aren't perfect (they aren't my ideal scenario), but definitely a step in the right direction.

  • RE: A Brief History of Husker Recruiting: 1980-89
This is just fantastic. I know there are holes in the data, but comparing the different recruiting years with ACTUAL data is something badly needed. Please just revisit this after all the data is in for the 2000s (and again for 2010s if you're still doing this).

  • RE: Active Signing Day for Huskers
One suggestion is to sort your table of commits. Maybe by stars or position or order of signing or at least alphabetical? Also, so far so good with the recruiting! Let's hope the remaining are all "N"!

  • RE: The Secret to Success
I almost think his sideline antics are overblown because of his facial expression. I don't know if that's just how he always looks when he's yelling or upset, but he looks like he wants to murder someone. I'm not even sure he's always as mad as it seems. Anyway, I think …more »

  • RE: Big Ten Behind in Bowl Position, BCS Stance
Granted it sucks to hear the media rail on your conference and I suppose it may hurt recruiting (but I don't believe it would be significant); but really it doesn't matter at all how the conference does in the bowls. Playing good competition and in better bowls seems much better for …more »

  • RE: Jim Delany Fighting a Rising Tide
I would add to Dan's post: The 8 teams are the 6 major conference winners and 2 at large (or 5 and 3 if the Big East is no longer worthy). The at-large MUST include undefeated teams from the other conferences if they exist. They can be easy fodder for the …more »

  • RE: Quick Stats on Nebraska
rugger, it's definitely possible. OSU is actually a possibility too (they're clearly a better team with Miller instead of Bauserman) if they win out (includes beating Penn State and Michigan). Penn State probably has to win 2 out of 3 against Nebraska, Wisconsin, OSU. I think it's more likely that Wisconsin …more »

  • RE: Quick Stats on Nebraska
Obviously, this has as much to do with who we played as it does with how we've improved. But it was very clear that the defense played its best game of the year against a good MSU team. I thought MSU would win, and I'm very excited to see our team's …more »

  • RE: Focus and Pressure
I think* there is a reason. Not sure where that "don't" came from.

  • RE: Focus and Pressure
I don't there is a reason that "the Ohio State offense that showed up in Lincoln" didn't show up against Michigan State. And that reason is Michigan State's defense. We have to be honest with ourselves that at this point their defense is much better than ours. They do a great …more »

  • RE: Big Ten Scholarship Update on the Table
BetterRed, athletic departments aren't making 100s of 100s of millions of dollars. In fact, most lose money. http://ctsportslaw.com/2008/05/22/ncaa-study-shows-that-most-athletic-programs-lose-money/ Basically football and basketball make money, and all the other sports cost money, and in the end the athletic department comes out behind. Kind of like how in academics, a number of students …more »

  • RE: Big Ten Scholarship Update on the Table
I don't know that academic scholarships went above and beyond. Federal grants and loans definitely did. I don't have the rulebook on me, but I believe student athletes are allowed to have part-time jobs. If you want to argue that they don't have time for it with practice. That's fair, but …more »

  • RE: Big Ten Scholarship Update on the Table
"Hard numbers indicate that there is a living cost associated with athletics that are not covered under a 'full scholarship'. " But then none of the items "not covered" that the article lists have anything to do with athletics. The same points can be made about academic scholarships. So I guess …more »

  • RE: A New Dynasty?
I can't watch women's basketball just as much as the next person, but seeing any Husker program bring in top recruits makes me happy. Good luck to the women, and I might just watch a game or two if they're on TV where I live.

  • RE: Heard It All Before
That's what I was going to say, Tom. Any QB controversy doesn't matter to me. The coaches know the talent and abilities in practice. The thing is that ALL of the QBs need to be ready. You can almost count on your QB getting hurt at some point and last year …more »

  • RE: 2011 Defensive Line Could Be Memorable
I definitely like the trend we're on. One year our DLine is great, the next year our DBs are great. Each year one of them picks up the slack to give the other time to learn and improve. You can't have proven seniors at every position every year. Hopefully this line …more »

  • RE: Huskers Get Respect in Final Polls
I'm not positive, but I don't think there is a Final BCS poll. The only point of the BCS is to determine #1 and #2 for the "championship" game. It's still the coaches and AP polls that crown the champions.

  • RE: Big Ten Division Announcements Tonight
I just don't understand why they can't go with the geographical alignment. Then you really don't need a crossover game because you have mich/osu, mich/msu, ind/pur, neb/iowa, iowa/minn, wisc/minn, ill/nw all together. Sure there are a few that will be broken up, but some are going to no matter what. And …more »

  • RE: A quick tour of the new Big Red Network
I can't reset my password either. I just emailed Jason about it. My other "complaint" right now is that the formatting of the articles/links on the main page confuses me. There are the smaller links to external content mixed in with the larger links to articles written by you guys. It …more »

  • RE: Is Stadium Expansion Worth Risking Sellout Streak?
I think people are over estimating the number of people dying to get into the stadium. There were a number of games when Callahan was coaching that were close to not selling out. I'm pretty sure there was one or two where a corporate sponsor had to buy up extra tickets. …more »

  • RE: Learning from the Big Ten's Meetings
Wait, Tom, aren't you the same one that wrote about hating the shift of power to the south and wanting to boycott big 12 sponsors [1]? Now we should embrace it? What exactly are teams supposed to "get on board" with? No TV network? As a fan, I'm not on board …more »

  • RE: Peso, Meet Your Offensive Counterpart, Wildcat
As long as our offense can execute power rushing between the tackles, speed rushing to the outside, and some sort of aerial attack (challenging corners and safeties), then I don't care what kind of formation it comes from. I think you just pick the formation/scheme that works best for your current …more »

  • RE: Suh and McCoy Battling for Top Spot
Talk is talk. If the Rams actually take McCoy it's because they have bad management. I will laugh at them and consider the team that takes Suh to be lucky.

  • RE: Heartbreaking Week for Husker Fans Over
It's just like MVP voting in other sports. The awards always go to people on the top teams. If Nebraska could have won the 3 close games, I think Suh might just take the heisman. However, Tom's exactly right about Suh finishing below McCoy -- absolute joke. Seems like a lot …more »
